Gerrit sends us this short and encouraging report from “on the ground” in Rwanda:

I am very tired but  as in Cuba, God has taken over and the people, in this case the prisoners, are running with it. All are excited, spirit-filled and more. So many are saying, “The project has changed my life, the teaching of the project showed me how to repent, it set me free through Jesus, and made me realize the depth of my sins,” and/or “I want to share with others, meet the victims; we pray for our victims…” It’s a bit overwhelming. People are begging to be admitted to the program.

Tomorrow I meet with  chaplains and my co-workers to debrief and incorporate lessons learned into our guidelines document. Great stuff! Project Ubumwe is far more than any of us could have planned or even imagined. The prison officials are beside themselves. They want us to throw it open. I said they had to be patient. Little by little we are learning and bettering the program daily. Even the outside communities where the chaplains have worked with victims are praising our approach and effectiveness, including mayors. I am so blessed to be part of this. We can only give all glory to God.

Final note: Gerrit preached last Sunday in the cathedral in Byumba and admonished many who are being led astray by false teachings. Even in the name of God people are misled. He also met up with the team from the International Anglican Church (IAC) in Colorado Springs.  He also attended the “Run for Rwanda.”

Please pray:

  • For renewal and strength after putting out so much in this short amount of time. The work is exciting and encouraging, yet is also very demanding.
  • Pray also for much wisdom, as there is so much work and so many opportunities; pray that Gerrit and the other chaplains and prison officials will have great discernment concerning how to best use their time and resources.
  • Pray also for abundant financial resources, and, if you feel led to give, please follow the prompts on the DONATE page.
  • All who partner with us–in prayer and in finances and in other ways–are participating in God’s Kingdom work—that we may see God’s will done “on earth as it is in heaven.” To God be the glory!

  1. Amazing work! Thank you Gerrit for being faithful as the Lord’s messenger. Thank you for not shying away from teaching God’s word loud en clear for all to hear, also to those led astray! Trust the last few days in Rwanda will be blessed.
