On  the visit to the vocational school in Byumba, in buildings that are sturdy, we once again became aware of the need for teachers and project coordinators. The Vocational School, under the covering of the church, was started by some who had great vision, but, unfortunately they left before the program was on solid ground.  However, the current staff is trying their best to keep the sewing, computer, welding and agricultural programs running. Gerrit is hoping to connect them with the trainers of a very successful vocational program in South Africa.

It is also apparent that  there is a great need for plumbers and electricians in the country. Many vocational programs focus on weaving, but the youth long to be trained in more “modern” trades.  At the time of our visit, staff from Compassion International were taught how to use Excel, but the trainer, who was keen but did not have the training herself, believed we were a gift as Celeste could assist. Spending an hour with the keen, bright and eager students, she helped them to overcome their fears and opened some new opportunities for them to learn. Beautiful dresses and bags are sewn, but marketing seems a problem. This seems to be the same with the welding program.  Strong, visionary, entrepreneurial leadership is very much needed.
